Halitosis

Halitosis is defined as the set of unpleasant odours emitted from the mouth, either occasionally or permanently. It is triggered by the presence of bacteria in the mouth and on the surface of the tongue.

Bad breath can be caused by various factors, although in general terms, we can group them into two types according to their origin: firstly, intraoral halitosis, i.e., that which is produced in the mouth itself due to an oral health problem, and secondly, halitosis of extraoral origin, which comes from problems in the stomach, respiratory system… etc.

Intraoral halitosis:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Caries
  • Gingivitis and periodontitis
  • Dry mouth and oral dehydration
  • Tobacco

Extraoral halitosis:

  • Respiratory problems
  • Stomach problems
  • Other diseases
  • Medications

Treatments for halitosis :

  • Strengthening oral hygiene
  • Controlling your diet
  • Do not drink alcohol or smoke
  • Drinking enough water
  • Regular dental check-ups
